JOB TITLE:    Bus Driver

GRADE:  112                                           

LOCATION:  Transportation                                     

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT:  9-Month

REPORTS TO:  Director of Transportation                                                                   

 

SUMMARY: The job of Bus Driver is done for the purpose(s) of transporting students and/or special education students over scheduled routes and/or to/from special excursions; enforcing rules, regulations and laws to maintain safety during transport; ensuring the safe operating condition of the vehicle; and ensuring the safety of special education students during transport, loading and unloading from buses.   

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent
  • Commercial Drivers License
  • CPR/first-aid certificate
  • Social Security Card
  • Proof of immunity to Measles and German Measles (MMR)
  • Valid picture ID
  • Valid IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card https://psp.azdps.gov/services/fccFormTriage

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Drives schools’ buses and/or vans for the purpose of transporting students and/or special education students over scheduled routes and to/from school and/or field trips in a safe and timely manner
  2. Advises students, special education students and other passengers of behavior requirements for the purpose of enforcing rules and regulations and maintain safety
  3. Assesses potential emergency situations for the purpose of taking appropriate action to protect the well-being of passengers
  4. Assists special education bus attendants for the purpose of providing for special needs of students during transport, safe ingress (entering) and egress (exiting) from buses, including emergency situations and normal transport
  5. Attends training for the purpose of maintaining skills and meeting requirements of school bus certificate
  6. Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections (e.g. fluid levels, tire pressure, exterior condition, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the safe operating condition of the vehicle and meeting state requirements
  7. Prepares reports (e.g. transportation log, inspection log, inspection sheets, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring compliance with established state and/or District requirements
  8. Cleans assigned vehicles, both interior and exterior for the purpose of maintaining appearance, sanitation and safety of vehicle
  9. Fuels assigned vehicles for the purpose of maintaining vehicle in a safe operating condition
  10. Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities
  11. Perform such other duties and assumes such other responsibilities as may be assigned by the Superintendent/Designee

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:  

Skills are required to perform multiple, non-technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions.  Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating equipment used in profession and adhering to safety practices.

 

Knowledge is required to perform basic math; read and follow instructions; and solve practical problems.  Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes:  pertinent codes, policies, regulations and/or laws.

 

Ability is required to consider a wide variety of factors when using equipment.  Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing specific, defined processes; and operate equipment using a variety of standardized methods.  Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with a variety of data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment.  In working with others, independent problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans.  Problem solving with data requires analysis based on organizational objectives; and problem solving with equipment is significant.  Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: meeting deadlines and schedules; working under stress; dealing with diverse situations and people in a professional manner; and communicating with diverse groups. 

 

RESPONSIBILITY:

Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods; directing other persons within a small work unit; and monitoring budget expenditures.  Utilization of significant resources from other work units is sometimes required to perform the job’s functions.  There is a continual opportunity to significantly impact the Organization’s services. 

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT: 

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands:  significant lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling; frequent climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling; and significant fine-finger dexterity.  Generally the job requires 90% sitting, 5% walking and 5% standing.  The job is performed under some temperature extremes and some hazardous conditions.
