REPORTS TO:  Director of Transportation

SUMMARY:  The job of Bus Attendant is done for the purpose(s) of providing for the safety and welfare of students during non-classroom activities; communicating observations and incidents that may impact students’ development or general well-being to other school personnel; and providing appropriate emergency care as may be necessary.   

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent
  • Job-related experience

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Administers first-aid for the purpose of providing immediate emergency care
  2. Assists bus driver as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities
  3. Assists students with personal care requirements for the purpose of addressing need or referral
  4. Monitors students on and/or around the buses for the purpose of providing for the safety and welfare of students
  5. Prepares reports (e.g. incident reports, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities and providing reference for follow-up actions
  6. Reports observations and incidents (e.g. discipline, accidents, inappropriate social behavior, violations of campus rules, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information to teachers and/or administration
  7. Secures students and/or equipment (e.g. wheelchairs, etc.) with restraints and/or tie downs for the purpose of ensuring the safety and welfare of students
  8. Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities
  9. Perform such other duties and assumes such other responsibilities as may be assigned by the Superintendent/Designee

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:  

Skills are required to perform multiple, non-technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions.  Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices.

 

Knowledge is required to perform basic math, read and follow instructions; and understand multi-step oral and written instructions.  Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes:  pertinent codes, policies, regulation and/or laws.

 

Ability is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing specific, defined processes; and operate equipment using defined methods.  Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with specific, job-related data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment.  In working with others, independent problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans.  Problem solving with data requires following prescribed guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is limited.  Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups; establishing and maintaining effective relationships with students; being attentive to detail and adhering to safely practices. 

 

RESPONSIBILITY:

Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision following standardized practices and/or methods; leading, guiding and/or coordinating others; and operating within a defined budget.  Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job’s functions.  There is a continual opportunity to have some impact on the Organization’s services.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT: 

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands:  significant lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling; and some fine-finger dexterity.  Generally the job requires 60% sitting, 30% walking and 10% standing.  The job is performed under some temperature extremes and some hazardous conditions.
