SUMMARY:  Responsible for coverage of classroom on a  flexible schedule for teacher absenses.  Familiar with the elementary grade program and a class environment; Prepared to engage students in a favorable learning environment and interested in personal growth; establishes effective rapport with pupils; motivates pupils to develop skills; attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation in accordance with each pupil’s ability; establishes good relationships with parents and with other staff members.

 

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Substitute Teacher Certification
  • Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card
  • Ability to read and follow instruction
  • Ability to collaborate and cooperate as a team member

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • BA degree
  • BA degree in Education
  • Training in classroom management and managing student behavior
  • Experience working with pre-K to 8th grade students
  • Experience working in a public school setting

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Assist and/or implement lesson plans and instructional materials as provided, utilize individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil to best utilize available classroom time for instructional purposesInstruct, as outlined by the Site Principal or Teacher, the pupils in basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
  2. Follow current schedules, lesson plans and seating charts, as assigned.
  3. Maintains the confidentiality of each student’s record.
  4. Establishes and maintains lines of communication with students and parents on a regular basis.  Communicates with parents to discuss pupils’ progress, particular needs or difficulties encountered in the school program; treats parents with respect when reviewing a child’s problems or progress, as assigned.
  5. Seeks the assistance of specialists or district resource persons to ascertain learning difficulties of students and appropriate services to meet their needs.
  6. Under the direction of the site principal and/or grade level teacher the substitute will maintain an effective learning atmosphere through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards and interest centers to meet the physical and psychological requirements of the students.
  7. Select and requisition instructional aids and materials; maintain required inventory records.
  8. Implement lesson plans maintained by the assigned teacher; Assists to instruct assigned classes in locations and at the times designated by the principal/supervisor, and reports for duty and other assignments on time, and supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day. 
  9. Establishes and maintains management and control of students in the classroom or under supervision.
    1. Develops and explains rules for classroom discipline and consistently maintains discipline in the classroom.
    2. Takes reasonable precautions to protect students’ safety, welfare and district property.
    3. Disciplines students in a fair and impartial manner, following district policies regarding the rights of students.
  10. Maintains professional ethics and attends required staff meetings and trainings.   
  11. Assists in implementing policies, administrative regulations and procedures established by the Governing Board, district administration and unit school principal.
  12. Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.  Assists teachers for the purpose of implementing curriculum.
  13. Directs student workers, volunteers, etc. for the purpose of maximizing their efficiency and meeting work requirements.
  14. Reports incidents (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment and adhering to Education Code, administrative and/or school policies.
  15. Perform such other duties and assumes such other responsibilities as may be assigned by the Superintendent/Designee.

 

EVALUATION:  Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provision of the Board policy or evaluation of professional personnel. 

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret education materials and programs.  Ability to write reports, procedure manuals, and correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of teachers, students, administration, and the community.

Communicates Aims and/or objectives to students in a well-planned, organized manner using clear and precise language.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: 

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference; ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to talk and hear.     Work involves sitting for extended periods of time, requires moving from one location to another, reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, bending and holding and grasping objects, climbing and balancing.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT: 

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job.  Employee works primarily in an indoor temperature controlled setting with periods of time throughout the day in an outdoor setting (Indoor 90% with average temperature setting 78/Outdoor seasonal 10%).  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
