SUMMARY:   To develop in each pupil an appreciation of music as an art as part of our general culture; to teach techniques of vocal and/or instrumental music expression; to discover and develop talents of pupils in the field of music; to develop knowledge and skills in listening to music and basic understanding of reading music.

 

SUPERVISES:  Instructional Assistant (if applicable)

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree with music major or minor
  • Arizona Teaching Certificate
  • Ability to play at least one standard orchestra instrument or ability to sing.

Such alternatives to the above required & preferred qualifications as the Superintendent/Designee may find appropriate and acceptable

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Plans a balanced music program and organizes daily class time so that preparation and instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time.
  2. Provides individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.
  3. Utilizes repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary, that are appropriate for the ages and skill levels of pupils.
  4. Controls the storage and use of school-owned property; makes minor adjustments and requests repairs to instruments as required.
  5. Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior conductive to learning and provides a productive environment during practice, group rehearsals, and musical performances.
  6. Evaluates each pupil’s musical growth and assigns appropriate citizenship and scholarship marks
  7. Participates in planning, rehearsing, and directing pupils in musical programs for school and community; applies knowledge of district procedures and limitations set on performance.
  8. Selects and requisitions books, musical instruments, and instructional aids; maintains required inventory records.
  9. Communicates with parents on pupil progress.
  10. Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs.
  11. Participates in faculty committees and sponsorship of pupil activities.
  12. Maintains professional competence through continuing education, in-service programs, and self-selected professional growth activities related to music.
  13. Perform such other duties and assumes such other responsibilities as may be assingend byt the Superintendent/Designee.

Statutory Responsibilities:

  1. Enforce the course of study for the assigned class or classes.
  2. Enforce the use of the adopted textbooks for the assigned class or classes.
  3. Enforce the rules and regulations governing the schools prescribed by the Governing Board, the Arizona Department of Education and any other lawfully empowered authority.
  4. Hold pupils to strict account for disorderly conduct.
  5. Exercise supervision over pupils on the playgrounds and during recess.
  6. Make the decision to promote or retain a pupil in the Pendergast schools.
  7. Make such reports as may be reasonably required by the superintendent of Public Instruction, County School Superintendent, Governing Board or School Administration.

EVALUATION:  Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provision of the Board policy or evaluation of professional personnel. 

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret education materials and programs.  Ability to write reports, procedure manuals, and correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of teachers, students, administration, and the community.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: 

Ability to work with mathematical such as probability and statistical inference.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
