JOB TITLE:  Grounds Maintenance Worker

LOCATION:  Maintenance Department                     

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT:  12-Month

REPORTS TO:  Director of Maintenance                  

 

SUMMARY:  The job of Grounds Maintenance Worker is done for the purpose(s) of serving, under general direction, in the performance of grounds maintenance, gardening, flood irrigation and related work as required to maintain attractive, sanitary and safe school grounds, equipment and landscape areas.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Assists in the maintenance and replacement of asphalt, concrete and fencing for the purpose of maintaining district facilities and grounds in safe, comfortable and operating condition
  2. Drags and fills playground areas for the purpose of maintaining safe play areas
  3. Instructs personnel in the proper methods, materials and equipment used in grounds care for the purpose of ensuring work is done correctly and safely in a timely manner
  4. Keep records and reports on activities for the purpose of written support and/or conveying information
  5. Lays out, installs and maintains sprinkler systems for the purpose of ensuring well-maintained grounds
  6. Operates and maintains, as assigned, landscaping equipment (e.g. mowers, tractors, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring equipment is in good working order
  7. Operates and maintains power driven equipment (e.g. lawn mowers, edgers, clippers, roto-tillers and other grounds equipment) for the purpose of maintaining school grounds
  8. Orders materials and supplies for the purpose of maintaining availability of required items and completing jobs efficiently
  9. Performs general custodial and maintenance duties either seasonally or incidental to grounds-keeping activities for the purpose of ensuring District facilities are kept in well-maintained condition
  10. Performs heavy physical labor and miscellaneous work for the purpose of maintaining grounds for the entire District
  11. Provides maintenance and operation of sprinkler and flood irrigation systems for the purpose of ensuring well-maintained grounds
  12. Repairs playground facilities and school grounds and other outdoor structures for the purpose of ensuring safe and well-maintained play areas
  13. Sweeps walkways and driveways and removes paper and rubbish for the purpose of maintaining clean, well-maintained school grounds
  14. Uses hand tools to work soil and remove weeds, undergrowth and debris for the purpose of maintaining school grounds
  15. Waters, trims and fertilizes lawns, shrubs, hedges, trees and flowers as directed for the purpose of maintaining attractive, safe school grounds
  16. Perform such other duties and assumes such other responsibilities as may be assigned by the Superintendent/Designee

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:  

Skills are required to perform single, non-technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions.  Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: utilizing equipment used in profession. 

 

Knowledge is required to perform basic math; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats and/or present information to others; and understand multi-step oral and written instructions.  Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes:  pertinent policies, regulations and/or laws and various position-specific information learned on-the-job. 

 

Ability is required to schedule activities and/or meetings; gather and/or collate data; and consider a number of factors when using equipment.  Flexibility is required to work with others; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate equipment using a variety of standardized methods.  Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals; work with specific, job-related data; and utilize job-related equipment.  In working with others, some problem solving may be required to identify issues and select action plans.  Problem solving with data may require independent interpretation; and problem solving with equipment is limited to moderate.  Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices; communicating with diverse groups; and meeting deadlines and schedules.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: 

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands:  significant lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling; frequent climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling; and some finger dexterity.  Generally the job requires 5% sitting, 70% walking and 25% standing.  The job is performed under some temperature extremes and some hazardous conditions.
