REPORTS TO: Director of Transportation
SUMMARY: The job of Vehicle Mechanic is for the purpose(s) of determining needed repairs and/or replacements on District vehicles; ensuring the availability of vehicles in safe operating condition; and providing written documentation of repairs to meet District, state and federal requirements.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma, GED or equivalent
- Experience as a bus mechanic, diesel mechanic or heavy truck mechanic
- Commercial Driver’s License (Class B with “P” Endorsement)
- ASE certification
- CPR and first-aid
- Fingerprint Clearance Card (IVP)
- Ability to communicate effectively with team members
Such alternatives to the above required & preferred qualifications as the Superintendent/Designee may find appropriate and acceptable
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- 2 years experience as a school bus mechanic, diesel mechanic or heavy truck mechanic
- Commercial Driver’s License (Class B with “S” Endorsement)
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assists with the writing and recommendations of specifications for buses, trucks, etc., for the purpose of providing input in accordance with District and state bid requirements
- Responsible for keeping the vehicle maintenance bays clean and free of all hazards
- Coordinates preventive vehicle maintenance programs for the purpose of maintaining vehicles in safe operating condition
- Fabricates parts for the purpose of providing necessary items as may be required for repairs
- Inspects vehicles (e.g. tires, damage (dents), upholstery (tears), etc.) for the purpose of documenting required information and meeting federal and state requirements
- Maintains records of repairs, costs, vehicle warranties, etc., for the purpose of documenting required information and meeting federal and state requirements
- Performs minor body work (e.g. front ends, fenders, upholstery, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining the appearance and safe operation of the vehicles
- Occasionally performs bus driver duties as required for the purpose of providing adequate coverage
- Prepares documentation (e.g. state bus maintenance log, fuel test log, repairs, vehicle condition report (VCR), maintenance records, purchase orders, etc.) for the purpose of providing written support and/or information to comply with regulating guidelines.
- Repairs vehicle systems/components, etc., for the purpose of ensuring the availability of vehicles in safe operating condition
- Replaces defective vehicle parts/systems (e.g. heating, electrical, tires, pumps, video equipment, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of vehicles in safe operating condition
- Responds to road calls regarding District vehicles for the purpose of performing emergency repair work in the field
- Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities
- Perform such other duties and assumes such other responsibilities as may be assigned by the Superintendent/Designee
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Skills are required to perform multiple, highly complex technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: utilizing equipment used in the profession.
Knowledge is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents and/or ratios; read technical information, compose a variety of documents and/or facilitate group discussions; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: pertinent codes, policies, regulations and/or laws.
Ability is required to schedule a significant number of activities, meetings and/or events; collate data; and consider a wide variety of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing specific, defined processes; and utilize equipment under a variety of conditions for multiple purposes. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with a variety of data; and utilize a wide variety of plans. Problem solving with data requires following prescribed guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is significant. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety procedures; being attentive to details; working under time constraints; meeting deadlines and schedules; and communicating with diverse groups.
RESPONSIBILITY:
Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods; leading, guiding and/or coordinating others; and directing the use of budgeted funds within a work unit. Utilization of significant resources from other work units is sometimes required to perform the job’s functions. There is some opportunity to significantly impact the Organization’s services.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling; frequent climbing and balancing; significant stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling; and significant fine-finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 25% sitting, 50% walking and 25% standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes and some hazardous conditions.
