JOB TITLE: General Helper (part time - p.m. shift)

LOCATION: Maintenance Department
TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: 12-Month
REPORTS TO: Director of Maintenance
SUMMARY: The job of General Helper is done for the purpose(s) of assisting the custodians in maintaining an attractive, sanitary and safe facility; providing adequate arrangements for meetings, classroom activities and events; and minimizing property damage, loss and liability exposure.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma, GED or equivalent
- Social Security Card
- Proof of immunity to Measles and German Measles
- Valid picture ID
- Fingerprint/background clearance (upon employment)
Such alternatives to the above required & preferred qualifications as the Superintendent/Designee may find appropriate and acceptable
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Arranges furnishings and equipment for the purpose of providing adequate preparations for meetings, classroom activities and events
- Assists custodians, playground assistants, crossing guards, etc., as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities
- Cleans school facilities (e.g. classrooms, offices, restrooms, grounds, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary, safe and attractive environment
- Informs students, other site personnel and supervisor for the purpose of providing information regarding activities, safety and/or proper maintenance of facilities
- Maintains supplies, equipment, vehicle, etc., for the purpose of ensuring the availability of required items
- Requests equipment and supplies for the purpose of maintaining inventory and ensuring availability of items as needed to properly maintain facilities
- Responds to emergency situations (e.g. injured student, broken window, fights, etc.) for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns
- Evaluates situations (e.g. involving other staff, students, parents, the public, etc.) for the purpose of taking appropriate action and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution
- Perform such other duties and assumes such other responsibilities as may be assigned by the Superintendent/Designee
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Skills are required to perform single, non-technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: a variety of position-specific skills.
Knowledge is required to perform basic math, understand written procedures, write routine documents and speak clearly; and understand multi-step oral and written instructions. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: various position-specific information learned on-the-job.
Ability is required to schedule activities; collate data; and consider a wide variety of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing specific, defined processes; and operate equipment using a variety of standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with specific, job-related data; and utilize specific, job-related equipment. In working with others, problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires following prescribed guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is limited. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices; communicating with diverse groups; and meeting deadlines and schedules.
RESPONSIBILITY:
Responsibilities include: working with immediate supervisor; providing information and/or advising others; and operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job’s functions. There is some opportunity to affect the Organization’s services.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling; and significant fine-finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 5% sitting, 70% walking and 25% standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes and some hazardous conditions.
